CHAMARU SOS
About
Like so much of Punjab, Chamaru, a small village an hour east of Patiala, has suffered the fall-out of flooding, particularly since September 3, when the nearby Ghaggar river overflowed. Many village homes were flooded and many hundred acres of crop fields were submerged.
Chamaru SOS is an initial action response formulated by Navtej Johar and Harpreet Singh Sarwara—both residents of Chamaru—to the aftermath of the flooding.
Key Priorities
As a part of the initial response, two key priorities have been identified:
1. Restoration and reconstruction of 10 houses which got damaged because of the floods - so that they are relatively secure from future flooding events
2. Support in readying the village farmlands (300 acres) for the upcoming sowing season - so that the farmers don’’t incur further financial losses beyond the loss of the current crop (100% of it got damaged)
Restoration and reconstruction of 10 houses
The 10 houses earmarked for reconstruction are in the low lying areas of the village, and are likely to be affected by floodwater in future flood events. A few are also temporary structures with unreliable roofs. The proposed plan is to build 10 brick-cement structures with raised floor levels and sturdier roofing.
Work will be done on 2 houses at a time, and can start as soon as funds are collected. Approximate cost of reconstruction per house is Rs 2 lakhs.
The projected timeline for the reconstruction of all 10 houses is 90 days from initiation (15 days per two houses), subject to the availability of funds.
Support in readying the village farmlands (300 acres) for the upcoming sowing season
To ensure that 60-65 of the worst affected farmers are able to prepare their fields and sow wheat in time for the upcoming crop cycle, Chamaru SOS will support these farmers with the initial costs to clear and prepare 300 acres of flooded farmland.
From 10 October - 25 October, the annual sowing season, farmers will need to:
• mix the clay-like mountain soil brought by the flooding with the soil underneath, in order to make the fields cultivable • level the fields to ensure uniform water distribution and to minimise runoff
• add Diammonium Phosphate (DAP khaad) to the soil
The approximate cost of this process is 10 lacs for the entire 300 acres, which will go towards providing farmers with diesel, to renting a leveling computer and to purchasing the Diammonium Phosphate. The support they'll receive through the raised funds will also ensure that they don't accrue further debt through this difficult time.
The funds for preparing the fields will be required before or by 10 October.
Breakdown of Total Expenditure
Execution
These projects will be executed on the ground by Harpreet Singh Sarwara with the support of Navtej Johar. Both Harpreet and Navtej are being closely supported in this response by a volunteer team at Chamaru SOS which currently includes Abhinaya, Nitasha, Simrat and Gurshabad.
The volunteer team will primarily focus on raising funds for the response, and ensuring financial hygiene, transparency and reporting progress to the public at large.
Transparency and accountability
Volunteers at Chamaru SOS will formulate and deploy processes which ensure both internal and external transparency and accountability - for example, review of funds inflow and expenditure, video documentation of execution of response, and on-site visits.
Updates of the response work will be posted regularly on the (insert Chamaru SoS’s instagram) .
